New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday to submit his resignation along with the resignation of his Council of Ministers. He was accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister chaired the last Cabinet meeting as the Prime Minister where a resolution was passed for the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha. He also gave a farewell speech to the nation where he thanked the people of the country for their support over the years. "Whatever I have got, I have got from this nation, a nation that instated a child born out of Partition to the highest position," he said.
During his speech, he also exuded confidence that better times await the country. "As I leave office my abiding memory is the love and kindness I have received from you. This country empowered me to rise to high office. This is a debt I will always bear with pride. The emergence of India as a major powerhouse is an idea whose time has come. India will show the world the way," he said.
Mentor LK Advani was ruthlessly sidelined, and others not in his camp sullenly made way. The stars did align themselves nicely, but Modi made his own luck so effectively that his rise to India’s top job had an eerie sense of inevitability about it.

His victory suggests that the ghosts of 2002 are consigned to an uneasy burial, for now. Some sort of reconciliation would be in order, setting apart Modi the PM from Modi the CM.
